Woman's bond kept at $1 million
The secured bond for a 19-year-old Goldsboro woman, accused of being an accessory to the murders of a man and a woman, remained $1 million following a hearing Wednesday in Wayne County District Court.
Alonza Sonye Bedell of Hunter's Creek Drive had been charged with being an accessory after the fact of a felony. According to court papers, she drove the getaway vehicle and hindered detectives in their investigation.
The two victims, Michael Shawn Maynard, 30, and Christie Nicole Jones, 25, of 213 Parkwood Drive were fatally shot on New Year's morning in Maynard's home at 176 Garrick Lane in Casey's Country Court off Sheridan Forest Road.
When Ms. Bedell was arrested Jan. 2, a magistrate ordered that she be held in the Wayne County Jail without bond. Then her bond was reduced a few days later by District Court Judge Joseph Blick of Greenville to $1 million during her first court appearance.
District Attorney Branny Vickory argued Wednesday that the bond should remain $1 million. Defense lawyer Paul Wright had asked for a reduction. Then Judge David Brantley agreed to keep the bond at $1 million.
Two men -- Christopher Lee Brown, 19, of Forest Knolls Road and Telly T. Cox, 21, of Greg Drive -- were arrested within hours after a witness' tip and charged with the murders.
Four hurt in wrecks
Four people were injured and damages were estimated at $13,700 in three recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, the Highway Patrol reported.
*Two people were injured in a three-vehicle collision at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday on New Hope Road near Woodrose Avenue, the Highway Patrol said. A passenger, Jamie McKenna, 25, of Greenbrier Drive, and a driver, Ciara Nicole Macanas, 16, of Todd Drive, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. McKenna's driver, driver, Laura Kristina Whitfield, 16, of Glouchester Road, was charged with failure to reduce speed and not having an operator's license after the rear-end collision. The third motorist was identified as Anne Kathryn Archer, 16, of Shelley Drive. Damages were set at $4,200.
*A driver was injured in a one-car wreck at 6:20 p.m. Tuesday on Emmaus Church Road near Pineview Cemetery Road, the Highway Patrol said. James Robert Jenkins Jr., 35, of Zion Church Road, Mount Olive, left Wayne Memorial Hospital against medical advice, a spokeswoman said. His car ran off the left side twice and overturned. Charges are pending, troopers said. The car, valued at $3,500, was demolished.
*A passenger was injured in a hit-and-run crash at 5:47 p.m. Monday on Ada Stroud Road near Sanderson Road, the Highway Patrol said. Daniel Nieves, 24, of Astro Road, Seven Springs, was released after emergency-room treatment. The driver fled after the pickup ran off the right side and overturned. Troopers said the truck was registered to Enrique Gonsales Gonsales of Ada Stroud Road, Seven Springs. The truck, valued at $6,000, was totaled.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A total of $1,500 and personal papers were stolen Wednesday from a home in the 100 block of Herring Road, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, Gustavo Ponce, said the thief had forced open a door to get inside.
*A 25-inch television and about 20 compact discs were stolen Wednesday after a door was damaged at an apartment in the 200 block of Five Points Road, deputies said. The resident, S.N. Browning, estimated the property's value at $450 and damage at $100.
*Four black men kicked open an apartment door in the 900 block of Evergreen Avenue and assaulted a woman from Dudley and an unidentified friend, Goldsboro police said. Neither the visitor, Aisha Quanshell Wynn, nor the other person could describe the intruders. Nothing was reported stolen.
Teen charged
An 18-year-old man was arrested Wednesday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with two felony offenses involving a 12-year-old boy.
Nathan Sean Francis Strang of Old Grantham Road was charged with a first-degree sexual offense and indecent liberties with a minor. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $115,000 secured bond.
Detective Sgt. Tammy Odom said her office investigated a report of an alleged sexual assault on the boy and then arrested Strang.
Arrest was wrong
A man arrested last year for failing to pay child support has been cleared. The arrest of Raymond James Goff, 43, of Boykin Drive, Dudley, had been reported Dec. 2 in the News-Argus.
The arrest resulted from incorrect records in the state's Child Support Office. Goff said the child had turned 18 three years ago. He also said the money he had paid and his lawyer's fee had been returned to him.
Larceny charge
Wayne County sheriff's officers, acting on an anonymous tip from Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers, arrested a 32-year-old man Wednesday and charged him with the larceny and possession of a stolen trailer.
Timothy Patrick Crowley of Pikeville-Princeton Road, Pikeville, was accused of stealing the trailer Jan. 6, Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour said. The trailer, valued at $1,600, was returned to its owner. Crowley's bond was set at $3,000.
