FREMONT -- The driver of a logging truck that ran into a house on U.S. 117 in Fremont this morning was being treated in the emergency room of Wayne Memorial Hospital at press time.
Fremont Police Chief Ben Reid said the driver, George Shelton Razor Jr. of Windsor, told him he was going south on Wilson Street, or U.S. 117, toward Goldsboro, when he came up behind a stopped car that was waiting to turn left. He said he couldn't stop in time and swerved to the right, sending his truck and load of logs into a house.
The accident occurred at 8:20 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 117 and South Street. Fremont EMS took Razor to the hospital. Nobody else was hurt.
Razor was driving the truck for Andrew L. Melvin Logging Company of Plymouth, N.C.
Damage to the house, owned by James Thomas Crawford, was at least $30,000. Damage was $4,500 to a car that had just been bought and was parked at the house. No one was at home at the time of the collision, Reid said.
Damage to a stop sign and a city street sign was about $75.
Reid said Razor was apparently following too close and going too fast. He said charges are pending.
