House fires
A toaster oven and cigarette ash on a couch triggered two small house fires, a Goldsboro Fire Department official said.
No one was injured. Damages totaled $2,000 Friday in the fires.
The toaster oven caused a fire at 4:09 p.m. at 215 Dewey St. The fire spread to interior walls, causing about $1,000 in damages to the home and $500 in damages to contents, Assistant Fire Chief Jerry Langston said.
The home, valued at $30,000, is owned by Sarah Harris and occupied by Richard Williams. The contents were valued at $5,000.
A burned cigarette left in a couch caused a fire in a family room at 7:30 p.m. at 928 Carver Drive. The fire was confined to the room, Langston said. Damage was estimated at $500 to contents. The building was not damaged.
The Goldsboro Housing Authority apartment, rented by Barbara Parker, was valued at $125,000 and contents at $10,000.
Women assaulted
One woman was struck with a hammer and another was hit with a plate, and both needed medical treatment, according to Goldsboro police reports. Two people also were arrested and charged with the assaults.
Shauna Hayes, 26, told police that she had been talking with her mother at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday at her home in the 400 block of East Elm Street, police said. When Ms. Hayes went outside, another woman hit her several times on the head with a hammer, police said.
Police later arrested Mary Ann Brown, 47, of East Elm Street and charged her with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and resisting arrest. She was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $40,000 secured bond.
Eleanor Mary Griffin, 42, told officers she was struck on the head with a plate at about 7 p.m. Saturday in her home in the 1700 block of South Slocumb Street.
Police then arrested Steve Donnell Black, 45, of South Slocumb Street and charged him with felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He was jailed in lieu of a $40,000 secured bond.
Ms. Hayes and Ms. Griffin were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Students released
MOUNT OLIVE -- The six students injured after their bus was hit Friday in the parking lot at Southern Academy have all been released from Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Police Chief Emmett Ballree said the injuries were minor.
The students, ranging from 12 to 16, were hurt after the bus they were riding was hit by a car behind it. The bus was waiting for the one ahead of it when the 1990 Honda, driven by Phillip Millner, 20, of Mount Olive, jumped forward, according to the report.
Tools stolen
About $6,549 worth of tools was stolen from an unlocked workshop in the 2200 block of Stevens Mill Road, a Wayne County sheriff's report said.
The resident, Vance Thomas Perkins, reported the theft of two tool boxes with tools, two saws, a cutting torch with a tank and a gauge, a drill and a nail gun.
Deputies also are investigating these reports:
*A coin collection was stolen after a door was pried open at a home in the 4000 block of N.C. 55 East. The resident, Daniel Glenn Price, put a $2,500 value on the collection.
*A sport utility vehicle reported stolen July 26 in Goldsboro was found burned Friday on a dirt path off U.S. 117 Alternate South. The SUV was worth $9,500, the owner, Ameriee Sparro Smith of Benton Street, said.
Investigations
About $2,403 in entertainment equipment and $2,000 in jewelry were stolen Saturday after a door was damaged at a home in the 500 block of North Daisy Street, a Goldsboro police report said.
The resident, Byron G. Gould, said about 100 compact discs, a DVD player, 20 DVD movies, two speakers, a video camera and a television-video cassette recorder combination were taken in addition to the jewelry. Damage was set at $10.
Police also are investigating these reports:
*A telephone, 10 DVD movies, a DVD player, a video cassette recorder and about $70 in change were stolen after a door was damaged at a home in the 1700 block of South Slocumb Street. The resident, Gloria Jones, put a $500 value on the property, in addition to the cash.
*A gray, four-door 2001 Nissan Sentra was stolen from the 1900 block of North William Street. The car, valued at $7,500, was driven by Joshua Nimmons of Wright Brothers Avenue.
*An estimated $1,050 worth of jewelry was stolen Saturday from an apartment in the 1000 block of Lincoln Drive. One resident, Tonya M. Barnette, reported the theft of $790 worth of jewelry. Ricco Moore said he also lost jewelry.
*A purple 1996 Honda moped was stolen from the 800 block of West Grantham Street. The owner, Wayne Eston of Dudley, put a $2,800 value on it.
*A black 1997 Tomas moped was stolen Saturday night from the 3000 block of Cashwell Drive. The owner, Johnny Daniel Lanier of Goldsboro, said it was valued at $1,600.
Driver injured
A driver from Goldsboro was injured and damages were estimated at $7,000 in a collision at 6 a.m. today at Slocumb and East Mulberry streets, a Goldsboro police report said.
Luther Bolden Jr., 60, of Evergreen Avenue was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Bolden's northbound pickup collided with a westbound vehicle driven by John Earl Breeden, 38, of Ball Street. No charges have been filed.
Missing
A 17-year-old girl was reported missing Saturday by her parents to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Stephanie Dawn Parnell of 2080-B Memorial Church Road, Fremont, was described as white, 5-feet-6 and 127 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes.
When she was seen last at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, she was wearing blue jeans, a black sweater, a black leather coat and a black and silver belt. Anyone with information on her location was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
Parole granted
Bob Woodrow Jennings, convicted of second-degree murder in Duplin Superior Court, has been approved for parole.
The Parole Commission announced Jennings release on Jan. 7. Jennings was convicted in November 1990 and sentenced to life.
The state's current sentencing law eliminates parole for crimes committed after Sept. 30, 1994. However, the commission paroles offenders who were sentenced under previous sentencing guidelines.
