Vetoed: Expect the Republican budget to become law

Gov. Roy Cooper has followed the script and vetoed the proposed state budget put forth by the Republican-led legislature.

We expected no less. Politically, Cooper could do nothing else or he would be admitting defeat.

We also expect the legislature to override his veto and the budget become law. The Republicans hold a big enough majority in the House and Senate to do so, as they have already proven several times.

Overall, we like the GOP spending plan. It appeals to our conservative fiscal nature and even contains some of the expenditures Cooper had pushed for.

We just hope the legislators are able to come up with the money for the veterans cemetery here in Wayne. We cannot in good conscience approve of a budget that does not in some way allocate money for the cemetery's upkeep. A large group of people worked very hard to get the cemetery built in Wayne County, and we feel responsible for it. We're not sure how the money for it got cut from the original budget, but we expect our legislators to find the money to keep it open. They have said they would, and we will hold them to their promise. We owe our veterans that.
