Well-deserved: County Commissioner Price recognized

Wayne County Commissioner Atlas Price has been named North Carolina County Commissioner of the Year.

The recognition came from the N.C. Association of County Commissioners at a conference in Charlotte.

That was an honor for Wayne County and an especially deserving tribute to a dedicated citizen who has served his county — and state — for many years.

Atlas Price was first elected to the County Commissioners in 1986. But before that, he had served for 10 years as a member, and also as chairman, of the County Board of Education. Because of that experience and his business background, he brought to the Wayne County Board of Commissioners a wealth of understanding of school needs, fiscal problems and public perceptions and concerns.

That knowledge has served him and our county — and all of us — well during his long tenure on the board of commissioners and his service as chairman of the board.

The state’s 100 counties also have benefited from his knowledge and leadership as a member of a number of important committees of the N.C. Association of County Commissioners and on its board of directors.

Atlas Price is not an aggressive, back-slapping political personality who comes on trying to impress us with his importance and superior knowledge. Instead, he is low-key, sincerely interested in hearing what the people in his county have to say.

Our folks appreciate that.

And the N.C. Association of County Commissioners recognized it when he was honored last week.
